Now that's a cupcake: croquembouche profiterole dessert glamour at Jellytots & Dollymixtures

This weekend only, which means when I'm in the UK in two weeks I will not get to taste this amazing Jellytots & Dollymixtures croquembouche cupcake, but I hope some of you will! Here's the official definition of their croquembouche cupcake: "Your choice of vanilla or chocolate cupcake filled with a light and fluffy Bavarian cream. Topped with a layer of frosting and a caramel glazed, chocolate drizzled mountain of mini choux pastry profiteroles!" What an amazing concoction. Their Valentine's Day cupcakes are available through the end of February in stores on Saturdays and Sundays (or by special order), and the purple and white cupcakes were wedding cupcakes. Awww...all via their Facebook page. Contact them at info at or +44 161 637 2199 and find out more at Their cupcakes are also available at Selfridges, Trafford Centre, Selfridges, Birmingham, Harvey Nichols, Manchester, Booths Food Stores, Knutsford and Booths Food Stores, Media City.

Beer cheese, cheddar and bacon cupcakes, anyone?

I actually had to look up beer cheese to find out what it is! According to Wikipedia it's a "cheese spread" and "Commercially produced beer cheese usually consists of a processed cheese base with a sharp cheddar flavor, while homemade varieties almost always start with sharp cheddar cheese. To this, enough beer is added to provide flavor and texture, as well as garlic, and a variety of spices including dry mustard, horseradish and cayenne pepper." These are beer cheese cupcakes with cream cheese, cheddar and bacon (!!) frosting, by Honolulu, Hawaii's Let Them Eat Cupcakes. WOW! They've gone all out for a special Super Bowl flavor. If that's too savory for you, check out their Twinkie cupcakes they made for First Friday, an even I am determined to attend when I next visit Honolulu. Via their Facebook page. Contact them at 808-531-2253 and visit for more information.

Deep fried peanut butter and jelly vodka shot cupcakes

Yes, these peanut butter and jelly cupcakes with peanut butter frosting are deep fried and have a shot of Van Gogh PB&J vodka, which I didn't even know existed! Get the recipe at Via Foodbeast.

Here's adescription from Van Gogh Vodka of their PB&J vodka, via their website:

The fragrance of our PB&J vodka is predominantly of peanuts complemented by the fresh fruit aroma of raspberry. In the mouth, the roles are reversed with the raspberry taking center stage supported by the toasty flavor of peanut butter and a hint of vanilla on the side.

Mountain Dew and creme brulee cupcakes

Both are by My Little Cupcake in Burlington and Essex, Vermont, via their Facebook page, and both are a bit off the beaten path in terms of cupcake flavors. Would you try them? I would (there probably isn't a cupcake I would refuse to try), but I am not a huge Mountain Dew fan. Someone should make a cream soda cupcake, though; I'd be all over that. Visit for more information.

Bet you haven't seen this cupcake flavor before: grenadine cupcakes topped with Nerds

One of my favorite things about cupcake blogging is discovering new things every day: new flavors, new designs, new ingredients, new cupcake toppers, new ways people work their baking magic into their cupcakes. That never gets old, and as we move toward celebrating 8 years (!!) of cupcake blogging this December with our Cupcake Awards on December 15th, I am continually in awe when I come across something like...grenadine cupcakes topped with Nerds! I found them on TasteSpotting and before I even knew what kind of cupcakes they were, I knew I wanted to find out more, because they were so colorful. They're made by The Baking Robot who has the recipe, which involves Sprite and grenadine!

Would you eat a "compost cupcake" made with coconut, coffee grounds, oats, chocolate chips and potato chips?

Compost is the cupcake flavor of the month at Seattle bakery Cupcake Royale. Here's how they describe it:

Our brilliant bakers have thrown in all the good stuff - tasty morsels of coconut, coffee, oats, chocolate chips, vanilla cake crumble and even Tim's Original potato chips into our already delectable chocolate cake.

We top it all off with a mound of chocolate frosting and roll it in a crumb topping of oats, dark chocolate, coffee grounds and more potato chips!
I do actually like all those items separately (okay, I've never had coffee grounds) so I think I'll like it. I'll be in Seattle this weekend so I will offer up a first-hand account. In the meantime, find out more about Cupcake Royale and their hours/locations as well as new vegan and gluten-free cupcake options at and on Facebook and @CupcakeRoyale on Twitter.

Happy April Fool's Day! Do any of these cupcakes fool you? The bagel and lox one gave me a run for my money. For more inspiration, see the Karen Tack and Alan Richardson cookbook Hello, Cupcake!, which inspired many of these trick cupcakes, and they've got lots more examples on their site.

Strawberry salsa jalapeño cupcake plus recipe link!

Yes, this is a cupcake using strawberry salsa and a jalapeño pepper to recreate a Cupcake Wars winning cupcake, and it's raw and vegan! It's by Shannonmarie at one of my favorite food blogs, Rawdorable, who has the recipe for you. I'm a big fan of spicy foods in general and jalapeños in particular, so I'm excited about this one.

Cupcakes on fire! Flaming Baked Alaska cupcakes with brandy by "cupcake arsonist" Sprinkle Bakes

Check out these outrageous and inventive cupcakes by blogger and "cupcake arsonists" Sprinkle Bakes, who has instructions and the recipe! Here's a teaser on how she makes them fire up: "To make the blue-flame magic happen, turn down the lights and sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of warmed brandy over each meringue-coated cupcake." They're a followup to her chocolate cupcakes with flaming strawberries, which I've also included a photo of below. Wow! Kudos to her for daring to break open the flames for the sake of a cupcake.

Just call me the cupcake arsonist.

This is the second time I've intentionally set fire to this cutesy confection. What's the appeal? Maybe I feel the cupcake could use a break from its curlicued reputation. Or maybe it appeals to my inner juvenile delinquent who loves to play with matches. All I know for sure is, this is one incredibly delicious show-stopping dessert! It's a perfect dramatic finale for any dinner party.
